How to Make a Scanned PDF Searchable (Free OCR)
You've got a scanned PDF. Looks like a normal document, but try selecting text — nothing. Ctrl+F to search — nothing. That's because scanned PDFs are just images of text. Your computer sees pixels, not letters.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) fixes this. It reads the images, recognizes the text, and gives you actual selectable, searchable, copy-paste-able text.
How to OCR a PDF
- Open the OCR PDF tool
- Upload your scanned PDF
- Pick the language (helps the engine be more accurate)
- Wait a bit — OCR takes longer than other operations since it's analyzing images
- Download the result as plain text or a searchable PDF
The cool part: this all runs in your browser. The OCR engine (Tesseract.js) loads and processes locally. Your scanned documents don't get sent to any server. For sensitive stuff like medical records, legal papers, or financial statements — that's a big deal.
What can it recognize?
Modern OCR is surprisingly good. Printed text in standard fonts? 95%+ accuracy. Supports 15+ languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, more). Handles columns, headers, lists, tables pretty well too.
Where it struggles: handwriting (unless it's really neat), blurry or low-res scans, super decorative fonts, and complex table structures. The text still gets extracted but the structure might not be perfect.
Tips for better results
- Scan at 300 DPI or higher. Single biggest factor. Lower resolution = blurrier characters = more errors
- Make sure pages are straight. Skewed pages hurt accuracy. If they're crooked, rotate them first
- Pick the right language. Document in French? Selecting French instead of English dramatically improves accuracy for accented characters
- Clean scans win. Coffee stains, highlighter marks, faded text — all make OCR harder
Output options
Two formats:
- Plain text — just the extracted text, paste it wherever you need
- Searchable PDF — the original scan with an invisible text layer on top. Looks the same, but now you can select text and search. This is usually what people want
